For a moment Albeson thought Deena was going to start up again. 'Whee, Jimmy,' she said. 'It's awful. The Germans are coming. They're coming to our school. Now there'll be some fights!'

'What do you mean? What Germans? What are you talking about?'

'Miss Gumley said. At prayers. Two of 'em, a brother and a sister. Coming to the school. And Jimmy...' Her voice dropped to a frightened whisper... 'They can't speak English. They can only speak German. Binnsie said... Binnsie said they eat people!'

Albeson lay on his back and stared at the ceiling. His heart fluttered. Of course they ate people, it was a wel-known fact. He knew all about Germans, he knew them inside out and backwards.
