When Luce's little cousin Colin screams at breakfast one morning about the 'black people in the empty house who are trying to get him Luce doesn't take him seriously - though Aunt Hilda does. But then some other creepy strangers who call themselves the Fianna turn up, babbling about the Kendrath and the children of light - meaning the 'black' people and little Colin. Luce begins to feel alarmed, and she and her friends resolve to keep a close watch on Colin. For a while all seems well - until Colin disappears.
